Translation of a poem by Debajyoti Mondal

The city has a 'heart'
This, for quite some time
The professor
Has continuously proposed

There, one after another
The lights shimmer
And one slowly grows dimmer
In front of the next

Perhaps the professor
Has found a heart
In the specs of dead men...
Yesterday just before
Having the dinner...

From the heart of the specs
Light
The light-dimming light
(Disperses into) descent
Upon the glassy sky
The professor watches
As the city's sky
Melts into
The spectacular sky

Poem

For all our days together, were the days together or us?
For all our days together, were we together or the days?
For all those days of yore, soft snowflakes return to the wind...
May this be a day together, let it always be...

Badiou...Mallarme...Philosophy...Literature

"The genuine infinity of being, though it is related to the multiple, is not bound to any bounds of reckoning, and does not carry any relation."
Alain Badiou makes this startling ontological observation about a non-relational being which is pure multiplicity and yet isolated in non-relation in his essay 'Mallarme's Method'.
The remark is all the more startling because it is not only Badiouean but also curiously Mallarmean. It's a point in his reading of the French poet which remains testimony to the way literature bends a philosophical system when that system makes inroads into its body.
Literature thinks in its own right and while it shares its fundamental operators in thought with those of philosophy, it's never entirely dependent on philosophical thinking. Literary thinking makes its presence felt precisely where it departs from a systemic as well as systematic philosophical thinking after coming perilously close to being identified with its systematicity.

Freud

Today is Sigmund Freud's birthday. It is fitting then that I find myself reading Interpretation of Dreams for a Freud reading group tomorrow.
Reading the book this time round makes me think in an apparently inane, obvious but what I think is a fascinating direction. Looking at the sheer wealth of literary quotations in the book I wonder to what extent these literary echoes were built into the unconscious of the analysands who came to see Freud. A lot of his quotes read like reports of the analysands' references.
If we read books as a 'discourse of the Other' and if there are reading traces of that discourse in our unconscious, this can be a fresh way of looking at the literature-psychoanalysis interface. Is the literary tissue integral to the constitution of the unconscious formation, be it a dream or a wit which has a literary structure after all?
What this also goes to show is the bourgeois class character of the 'well read' analytic dialogue...wonder what Karl Marx whose birthday it was yesterday, would say to that or the true blue classless 'zamindar' Rabindranath Tagore whose birthday is coming up tomorrow!!!

On The Sense of an Ending

"when we are young, we invent different futures for ourselves; when we are old, we invent different pasts for others"
Read Julian Barnes's 2011 novel The Sense of an Ending. A lovely read of a twisted plot which lets the cat out of the bag right at the end.
A treasure trove of meditations on time, nostalgia, memory, history and ageing. But at another level, it's a narrative of friendship and love which eventually admits the illegible cipher in the figure of 'a woman' evoking the central enigma of desire at large and feminine jouissance in a specific way. Mrs. Ford's secret 'horizontal gesture at waist level' remains the Real of feminine jouissance, never to be penetrated by the male narrator.
What gives sense to the ending is a strictly senseless point where the signifier plays a pure equivoke in the form of the letter. And the letter belongs to 'a woman'!

On The Man in the Dark

The reviewer in 'Independent on Sunday' writes about Paul Auster's 2008 novel 'Man in the Dark':
"After a dozen novels one is used to watching him break new ground. This time Paul Auster breaks your heart too" and for once I do agree with the reviewer's remark here.
A heart-rending tale of memory on fiction and fiction on top of memory; of relations made, unmade and remade in time; of wars inside out in parallel worlds of fantasy; of loneliness and the horror of a life of facticity; of the unrelenting quest for dialogue in the dark; of metaphors in memory which turn real on the windows of fiction; of transgenerational transmission of similarities and differences, of lives and life writings as discoveries of liminal zones; of the authority of the author and the failed rebellion of his figment; of death and its lingering persistence in life to come; of cinema and its affective communication through the silence of objects; of the political experience of change, trouble and violence as markers of the self; of the devastating illumination of images over the opacity of words; of everything else in between the real and the imaginary and finally, to quote Rose Hawthorne, the youngest daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose life one of the characters of this book attempts to reconstruct, of the "weird world" which "rolls on"...on and on in rounds...

Some stray thoughts on September 5: Teachers' Day in India

To try to teach what cannot be taught: life itself...life as such...and a structure of feelings: a constant struggle to teach where teaching fails...has to fail...must fail and yet go on in an effort to take one through that...'aesthetic education' in our day and world...
For me, teaching is woven into the history of my subjective life...Born in a family of teachers, it has constituted me in a way right from the days when I would wake up in the morning, a little boy, to the sights and sounds of teaching...
Teaching for me is that excited invocatory act of the body, the passion for transmission, a passion to make others passionate...there is resonance even when it fails...
Love for my mother who taught me the English language and my father who taught me literary thinking and all my teachers, my friends, literary writers and thinkers who have taught me what can never be taught over the years...some have transmitted more than others but I think that has to do with what I wanted to take in...
Teaching for me is that strange process of translation which moves back and forth between company and solitude, pushing the singularity of the learner with the teacher's own singularity until they can be placed right beside each other.
Teaching and learning is that magical crossing of desires...for the act of teaching, each one of my teachers will always be unforgettable to me...
Finally, in fidelity to the necessary impossibility called teaching that I have come to love over the seesawing years of my life...

Poem

I write to you, the passing light in the horizon
you hold the promise of a world never to be afloat on the surface...
I write for you, the old dying light
cause you have the courage to die everyday...

Polemic

This is Prof. Prasanta Chakravarty's analysis of the Kabir Suman-Parichay Patra debate which I am tempted to give the Foucaultian title of "The Order of Discourse" smile emoticon
This sharply insightful discussion of the nuances of modernity in the rhetoric of urban discourse is a must read for all those who followed the 'duelogue' on FB but also for those who didn't. He has put the emphasis on the important juncture where a potential crossing of the sacred and the profane is at stake.
A few raw and rough responsive thought-points on the piece:-
1. It does beg the question about the function of political correctness in discursive rhetoric and its strategic over-simplification to posit an argument.
2. The political Other's translation into a religious Other needs to be thought through.
3. A discourse can become religious without it having any bones to break with religion as such. In my Lacanian parlance, I will say a discourse which embraces dogma and installs itself exclusively on the basis of an S1 (A master signifier) and insists that this S1 cannot be and MUST (there is prohibition) not be put into a chain with other signifiers, risks becoming religious. I feel sad to say this but it is clearly a truth for everyone to see that the discourse around my favourite Bengali singer is taking (dare I say has always already taken) that shape.
4. Having said that, I do not think the secular can be posited simply as a break from the religious. It has to work through religion if not translate it into profanity without becoming what Agamben calls a signature of the sacred. That's the task beckoning the world of the future.
Thanks to Prof. Chakravarty for this absolutely stimulating discourse which has managed to revitalize this thread of arguments.

On The Hour of the Star

"The instant is that blink of time in which the tire of the speeding car touches the ground and then touches it no longer and then touches it again."
Reading The Hour of the Star is the experience of such an instant which couples motion with the surface, uncouples them till it re-couples again through a tactile encounter, hesitating between proceeding and receding. Lispector's writing outwrites the written. As Colm Tóibín says, she writes as if no one had written before her and there's no writing outside.

Points on The Imitation Game

A layered film on a complex thematic network comprising a space from World War II to autism and from scientific invention to homosexuality...Benedict was great in a signature role with his somewhat typical genius syndrome.
Some quick thought-like questions or question-like thoughts on the film:
1. Science is not without its subject!
2. What's the ethic of action in scientific experiments and inventions? Is it about saving lives or strategies?
3. Science has its own affect.
4. How important is the sex of the first partner in a defining and formative first encounter in determining sexual preference?
5. When does your relation with your ideal ego become sexual?
6. The sentence that defines your life in one go has to come from the Other, as it were.
7. Repeat something if you want to hide it!
8. Can a machine be a substitute object for human mourning? In other words, can you make your ideal ego in the form of a machine, bringing it back from the dead?

On The Brooklyn Follies

"That's what happens to you when you laid in a hospital. They take off your clothes, put you in one of those humiliating gowns, and suddenly you stop being yourself. You become the person who inhabits your body, and what you are now is the sum total of that body's failures."
A book that began with the bizarre ungroupings and regroupings of a precarious American family, meanders through Auster's preoccupation with the life unlived that could've been lived and its lingering shadow on the life being lived and finally pans out into a majestically expansive closure where 9/11 as the traumatic event par excellence can only be written on the very brink of silence. The life of the invisible shines as an inner refuge from an external reality gone all wrong and the final plan of having a 'biography insurance' becomes a refuge against the Terror attacks in retrospect. A good book becomes a great book in its finale.

Thoughts on Shamitabh

A brilliant idea not so brilliantly executed...Bollywoodization plays spoilsport...Amitabh hams on occasions but pulls off other scenes only the way he can...one feels for the great actor he is and the greater actor he could have been! He would do so much the better without the melodramatic pitch which erases the difference between acting and over-acting. Dhanush is powerful and Akshara immensely cute and natural...kudos still for the voice experiment theme which has profound implications and remains uncharted especially in relation to the industry and showmanship contexts.
For me, the peak was Amitabh's remark early on in the cemetery that there is nothing to fear in a graveyard as no one ever dies in it. One goes there only after overcoming death and fear. The depth of understanding with which Mr. Bachchan delivers the brilliantly nuanced dialogue shows his class but then again one always desires more poise from an actor of his calibre.

A thought-let/

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Religion has triumphed because mortality is a score human beings are yet to settle.
